Chinese Fricatives
Traditional phonetic descriptions of Chinese maintain that retroflex and dental fricatives before / i / produce a syllabic fricative vowel symbolized as in the examples below. It is certainly true that the fricative noise carries over into the beginning of the vowel. But the greater part of each of these vowels does not have any fricative turbulence.
